British Champion!

I’m pleased to announce that Gawain is the 99th British Champion after defeating GM Stephen Gordon in a topsy turvy tie break. I had a front row seat and I was super nervous but Gawain came through after blundering his queen. Unfortunately for Ste he found it difficult to control his nerves.

Gawain will write an update soon about the last few rounds and his impressions.

Congrats Gawain and Sue. Goodness me I only saw the first play-off game last night on Chessbase.com. I must say my first impression was an overwhelming feeling of sympathy for your opponent. I was reminded of a game that I resigned in a position where mate in one was actually available. Possibly that was just a tiny bit less traumatic given I was playing in the Wellington Chess Club B Grade champs rather than in a play-off for the British Championship! But it’s the one problem with chess; it’s truly a zero-sum gain and everyone who finds joy is balanced by someone else wallowing in ill-deserved misfortune. Never mind. No doubt Stephen Gordon has had and will have many more triumphs so for now to the victor the spoils!
